Building
A Historical Gem of Davison
The Woolley Building, a cherished landmark of the Davison Area Historical Society, stands as a testament to the dedication and history of our community. Located next to the Davison Historical Museum at 263 East Fourth Street, this building holds a special place in our town’s history.
The Origins of the Woolley Building
Originally built in 1893 at the southeast corner of Main and Mill Streets, the Woolley Building began its life as the Wilson Hills Candy Store. The back of the building housed the Ladies Lending Library, providing a community space for both leisure and learning.
Dr. Floyd E. Woolley: A Legacy of Care
In 1904, Dr. Floyd E. Woolley, a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary School, purchased the building. He moved it three blocks east next to his home on Lapeer Street and established his veterinary practice. For over 50 years, Dr. Woolley served the Davison and Lapeer areas with dedication, often traveling by horse-drawn carriage to tend to animals far and wide.
Preservation of History
Dr. Woolley continued his work even after a minor stroke in 1950, eventually retiring in 1956. Remarkably, he left his office untouched, preserving his tools, equipment, and even the pot-bellied stove. In 1989, his family donated the building to the Davison Area Historical Society. That fall, the building was relocated to its current site, next to the museum.
